Today, 4 years ago

This morning, my Timehop app reminded me that I wrote the ending of That Thing Called Tadhana four years ago today.

Here are some notes as I saw this photo again:

1. Look at that filename! DREAMFILMSEQ.docx. O ‘di ba, all caps!

I would later call this The Mace Castillo Story: Lord, Pangit Ba ‘Ko? it’s Tadhana’s original title when I submitted it for Cinemalaya that year. I made it to the semis. Hindi ako umabot sa finals. The next year, I submitted it to Cinema One Originals and Palanca with the new title – That Thing Called Tadhana. Ayun, naswertihan. Salamat, tadhana!

2. Look at the sequence number! It’s XX! This is because whenever I write a screenplay, I almost always have an opening and ending first, then I work the middle part out as I move along. Minsan, kahit ‘yung shots. Kapag alam ko na ‘yun, that’s a good sign – alam ko na saan papunta ‘yung kwento; ang kulang na lang, paano pupunta doon. That’s also how I know if I’m in trouble – kapag hindi ko alam paano magtatapos sa umpisa pa lang. Lagot.

If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know that this isn’t Tadhana’s ending. Tadhana ends with an epilogue-ish scene with Anthony and a book, right? And it did.#
